As a longtime pikmin fan this game added many improvements, like an increased focus on plot and characters and sort of a "mix" between the strict time limit of Pikmin 1 and the endless allowable time of Pikmin 2. However I did miss the swarming ability just to be able to control the pikmin a bit better, although the new "charge" command is rather OP. Overall the game is great, but is too short (like Pikmin 1). DO NOT buy it here because anything above $60 is waaay too much for this game. I wouldn't buy it for more than $40 personally. If you're new to the series, this is a real-time strategy game with a strong emphasis on time management, organization, exploration, and combat. Each "day" is divided into ~13 minute long segments, so you need to prioritize what to do with that time efficiently. Should you spawn new pikmin? Look for juice? Try to tackle a boss or at least clear the way to get to it? The best answer is generally "all of the above", so you need to organize efficiently. The graphics are absolutely stunning. Although the game encourages you to complete it in the shortest amount of time, you can realistically take as long as you need (as long as you have the juice, but after the first few days you shouldn't have to worry about that. There's more juice available in the game than you'll ever need to complete it). Fantastic series.

I've played the first title on Gamecube when that come out, but haven't thought about that game in a long, long time. I did like it a lot though, it was probably my favorite game for that system. I got a Wii U from my job as a separation gift (nice of them, I have to say!) and picked this out of the scant list of titles for my Wii U.I have to say that I was impressed, but feel like they may have taken the original idea and over complicated it a bit. Mind you I haven't played Pikmin 2 and am completely unfamiliar with it.I'll start with the good stuff first. The environments are beautiful. It was the first thing I noticed when I started playing. The levels you search through are stunning to look at and everything works together so well to create these fairly expansive stages/ecosystems on the planet the game takes place on. The Pikmin and characters themselves though aren't so nice, and I think that was absolutely done on purpose for the nostalgia, personality and feel of the game. I absolutely think they made the right choice as well. The levels were challenging, but would go at a fairly similar pace. I would take a while to figure out what to do, and then go on a tear and collect 3-5 fruit in 1 day, rinse and repeat; it was usually once I figured out what to expect in the levels. Overall I would say they weren't perfect, but definitely very, very well done.I also really liked the addition of two extra types of Pikmin, Rock and Flying. They added some extra puzzle options to the maps and also some new creatures which required additional tactics, which I like as what would be considered 'older' gamer for this type of title. Now to what I didn't like...I thought the control scheme was clunky and hard to manage. There are two options - one using the touch screen as the primary control device, and the other, which is what I used, is using the joysticks and buttons. The constant swiping was getting irritating, and the aiming mechanics were annoying to deal with, so I went with what I knew already. Even that became irritating at times due to the fact that you have to cycle through each type of Pikmin and two characters. So if you have some of every type of Pikmin and the full 3 characters, AND guys holding bomb rocks, you need to shuffle between 8 things. If you need one in a pinch and you miss, it.. too bad! That brings up the other thing that I wasn't a fan of, and that is the fact that there are 3 characters to use. I appreciate when they're needed to solve a puzzle, but it just became such a burden to have to cycle through all of this stuff, and then switch between 3 people... it was just too much. I did get used to it, and fairly proficient at it, by the end of the game, but I don't think I'll pick it up again for a while.I would recommend this game for people with younger (but not too young) children that might have a slightly harder time figuring out puzzles to balance things or using a specific type of guy to do whatever task they're needed for rather than for an adult that would typically be able to chug right through this game in a few hours. I think I beat it in 8-10 hours while taking my time to enjoy it.It's a very good game, but definitely tried to capitalize on the touch screen a bit too much. I would still absolutely recommend it if you were a fan of the original like myself.

If you liked the previous Pikmin games, you will surely enjoy this one too, as Pikmin return in HD on WiiU. In this game, the crew of the SS Drake are sent out on a mission to gather food, as their homeworld, Planet Koppai, is facing a food shortage. The crew consists of Alph (the engineer), Brittany (the botanist), and Charlie (the Captain). These are the three characters you can control this time, which allows you to have three different teams of Pikmin and switch between them to get more done faster. So where is Olimar this time? You'll have to play to find out in story mode. I don't want to spoil the story of course. The classic red, blue, and yellow pikmin return. Red are immune to fire damage. Blue are unharmed by water. And yellow are immune to electricity and can actually form wires this time around to connect power to a light bulb. In addition there are two brand new pikmin types this time around. I won't say anything about them to avoid spoiling them for anyone who doesn't know.Instead of treasures, we have fruits to collect this time around. Collecting fruit increases your supply of juice (which is essentially your food supply). You need to keep your food supply up because if it runs out, its game over. So getting more fruit gives you more days to play. This may sound like the game will be overly difficult, but it really isn't. They give you plenty of fruit. There is a point in the game where another character steals your food supply, and this may sound really cheap, but you will get it back. And plenty of fruit is available in the meantime so it's not too big of deal. It serves to add some extra tension to that part of the story, and I don't think that's a bad thing. There are also many special documents to find and collect in the game world this time as well.Pikmin 2's Mission Mode returns as well. There are 3 mission mode categories this time. Collect Treasure, Battle Enemies, and Battle Bosses. 5 levels in each category are unlocked as you progress in the main game or beat previous levels in mission mode. Also, letting your game update gets you one level from each of the DLC packs free. The fact that some of the mission mode levels are DLC didn't really please me, but the DLC is pretty cheap so I got it anyway because I love Pikmin.Pikmin 3 is a great addition to the Pikmin series. If you liked the previous Pikmin games, you should definitely pick this one up!

In the past, I've never really been that interested in the Pikmin series. Gameplay footage from the first two games never managed to hold my interest. However, something about Pikmin 3 intrigued me. I couldn't tell what, but after watching many gameplay trailers, I decided to take the plunge and buy Pikmin 3. And it was worth it. I discovered that I had been missing out on a series full of charm and top-notch gameplay, and Pikmin 3 is well-worth your time and money.*STORY*Pikmin 3 revolves around the adventures of three space explorers: Alph, Brittany, and Captain Charlie of the S.S. Drake. Their home planet, Koppai, is in the middle of a food crisis. They send the three to a remote planet named PNF-404 to gather fruit for their starving home planet. However, the S.S. Drake crash lands on the surface of PNF-404, and the three crew members are separated. The story then begins to revolve around three major plot points: 1) The crew must reunite, 2) The crew must find fruit to bring back to Koppai and to keep themselves fed, and 3) The crew must find the cosmic drive key, a crucial part of the ship that they need in order to return to Koppai. The story is quite gripping and there is a major plot twist later on in the game. This is honestly one of the few times where the story kept me fully interested and gripped until the end, and I commend Nintendo for doing that.*GAMEPLAY*The core gameplay of Pikmin 3 revolves around the player throwing their Pikmin to achieve various tasks. The Pikmin are the key to everything, as you must perform every task using the Pikmin, whether it be fighting enemies or collecting a piece of fruit. The game uses a "Day" system, and each day lasts about 15 minutes. At the end of each day, you must have all of your Pikmin gathered up or else you risk losing them. As such, Pikmin 3 really stresses time management and multitasking as key gameplay elements. You can control each of the three characters separately, allowing you to split up the work amongst them. However, I found it to be easier to simply keep the three characters together at all times and to only multitask when it is absolutely necessary. Nonetheless, time management will always be a crucial part of the experience, and you must decide whether you have enough time to complete a certain task before the day is up or if it would be more worthwhile to complete the task the next day.Pikmin 3 makes use of five different Pikmin types. The Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin return from the previous two installments, whereas the Rock and Winged Pikmin are new additions. The Red Pikmin are resistant to fire, the Blue Pikmin can survive in water (keep in mind that water is fatal to all other Pikmin types), the Yellow Pikmin are able to conduct electricity, the Rock Pikmin can smash through crystals, and the Winged Pikmin can traverse all different types of landscapes. There isn't one Pikmin type that feels underused, and the balance between them is perfect. While each Pikmin type has their advantages, you will need to use all five types in order to fully explore the game world and collect everything there is to collect. On the surface, Pikmin 3 isn't overly challenging. The real difficulty comes from your ability to assess a situation and determine the best way to complete a task without costing too many of your Pikmin. This is the true challenge that Pikmin 3 presents, as you want to end the game with as few Pikmin deaths as possible. Finally, Pikmin 3 presents several different control schemes, however, the Wii Remote and Nunchuck combination stands out as the definitive way to experience the game. The Wii Remote and Nunchuck combination allows for more precise aiming and it allows you to run away and aim behind you at the same time. This may not sound like an important feature, but it is very crucial to the gameplay.*LEVEL DESIGN*Pikmin 3 contains five different areas for the player to explore. While this may not seem like much, each area is vast and contains a large variety of different environments, including caves, underwater caverns, and more. The main goal for each area is to find and defeat the boss battle, which will allow you to move on to the next area. In order to reach the boss battle, you must perform several tasks, such as building bridges and pushing ramps into place. In addition, the fruit contained in each area is meticulously placed, and in many cases will require you to think and determine the best way to recover it without costing too many of your Pikmin.Speaking of the boss battles, they are appropriately huge and challenging to defeat. Each boss is unique and each has their own weakness. Exploiting that weakness often involves using a specific Pikmin type. The boss battles really do a great job in providing a sense of fear and stress, as you don't want to lose any of your Pikmin. As such, finally defeating the boss provides such an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment that you can't wait to find the next one and give it justice.*SINGLE PLAYER*Pikmin 3 provides a very solid single player experience. This is primarily because there really is no rush to finish the main adventure, and you can take however long you want, so long as you have enough food in your food supply. This really caters to all gamers, including the speed gamer and the gamer that likes to take their time and fully uncover everything Pikmin 3 has to offer. In addition, you do not have to collect every piece of fruit in order to finish the game. This really makes Pikmin 3 accessible to everyone, and I'm really glad Nintendo took that extra step to make this game available to all gamers.*MULTIPLAYER*Pikmin 3 also provides two multiplayer modes: the cooperative Mission Mode and the competitive Bingo Battle. In Mission Mode, you and your friend must collect as much treasure as possible within a certain timeframe, usually ranging between five to eight minutes. Mission Mode is a fantastic addition and the co-op is fantastic and it works perfectly. In fact, the splitscreen co-op works so well that it makes me wonder why Nintendo didn't include co-op in the main adventure. It would be a lot of fun to play through the main adventure with a friend, and it is a missed opportunity.Bingo Battle, on the other hand, is pure insanity, chaos, and fun. In a nutshell, Bingo Battle dumps the two players in a small arena filled to the brim with enemies, fruits, and collectables. Using a small squad of Pikmin, you must collect the items you need in order to complete your Bingo card. In addition, you can sabotage the other player by taking the item they may need to complete their card.Overall, the multiplayer modes offered here are a lot of fun, but it leaves me wishing that Nintendo had incorporated some type of online play. Even if it was limited to online play with your registered Wii U friends, any form of online play is better than none.*GAMEPAD INTEGRATION*Even though the Wii Remote and Nunchuck combination is the ideal way to play Pikmin 3, the GamePad is still absolutely necessary to experience the game to its fullest. The GamePad constantly displays a map of the area. The map shows you the location of every piece of fruit in the area, the location of the other characters, and the location of all of your Pikmin. This is extremely essential, especially when the day is drawing to a close and you must gather all of your Pikmin. The "Go Here" feature built into the GamePad is perhaps the most important tool in the whole game. You can use your finger to drag to any location on the map and click the "Go Here" button. Your squad will automatically head to that location. This is extremely important, especially while you are multitasking. Off-TV Play is also available, but keep in mind that you must control the game using the GamePad while in Off-TV Play. Overall, the GamePad is put to good use in Pikmin 3, and it shows how the GamePad can be essential to the gaming experience.*GRAPHICS & SOUND*Pikmin 3 is a simply beautiful looking game. The environments are so lush and realistic looking that you would almost believe the developers simply filmed the environment outside and added the characters, Pikmin, and enemies in later. Every now and then, there will be a day where it rains in the game, and this also exemplifies how realistic the game looks. The environment looks appropriately wet and you can even see raindrops falling from the various plants. That being said, not everything is perfect. The ground textures look dated and out of place when compared to the rest of the environment, and there have been several rare and minor instances where the game lagged. These small complaints aside, Pikmin 3 is one of the best looking games on Wii U.In addition, the music for Pikmin 3 is wonderful. For the most part, it is very calm and relaxing, but it slowly becomes more upbeat and rambunctious as you start to battle an enemy. There are also moments where the music slowly fades out, indicating that something big and bad is about to appear. Essentially, the soundtrack is very atmospheric and it works hand-in-hand with the graphics to provide that sense of realism that the game is trying to achieve, and honestly, it succeeds.*VERDICT*In the end, Pikmin 3 is a fantastic game. The gameplay is top-notch and it plays marvelously, and the atmospheric graphics and soundtrack are just the icing on the cake. Despite a few minor nitpickings with the multiplayer modes, I can safely say that Pikmin 3 is a must-have for any Wii U owner that may be looking for a great strategy game.STORY: 10/10GAMEPLAY: 10/10LEVEL DESIGN: 10/10SINGLE PLAYER: 10/10MULTIPLAYER: 8/10GAMEPAD INTEGRATION: 10/10GRAPHICS & SOUND: 9/10FINAL SCORE (not an average): 9/10

Pikmin 3 is a great adventure strategy game for any Wii U owner. Each element of the game really brings out how much fun and challenging it can get.The Story:In a nut shell, 3 explorers are sent to the planet to find food for their planet ( if you are asking, wait wheres Olimar from the last two games, he is in the story but not playable, haven't found out just yet why). As the story progress, you find different Pikmin to help you find food, and defeat any creature that gets in your way. Unlike the last two games, the characters really interact with the environments and events that occur, and trust me there are a lot.The Pikmin:Just about the same as the last two games, except with two new additions.1.) Red Pikmin: Resistant to fire, and the strongest of the Pikmin.2.) Blue Pikmin: Can survive in water.3.) Yellow Pikmin: Resistant to electricity, and can be thrown higher than other Pikmin.4.)Rock Pikmin: Used to break glass structures and enemies, a little clumsy at times.5.)Pink Pikmin: Small, always flying Pikmin. Can carry objects over pretty much anything. The last two, White Pikmin (poison) and Purple (super strong) are only usable in the other modes of the gameControls:You have four options:1.) Game pad with TV2.) Wii remote and nunchuk with Game pad and TV3.) Wii U Pro controller with Game pad and TV4.) Game pad only (Off screen game play)Note: The Game pad is required for playing the game, as it has many features to help play, such as being a map.The best way for me was the number 2 controls, since using the Game pad only can be difficult and awkward when leading your Pikmin.Modes:1.) Story Mode2.) Mission Mode (in which you are timed to collect items or defeat enemies to score points. After which you can see world wide who has the best scores)3.) Bingo Battle ( A multiplayer game where you and a friend compete to finish a bingo card by collecting enemies or items. I have tried it, and can say it is good, but it can get annoying when your friend sicks his/her Pikmin on you)GraphicsThe HD graphics are beautiful, making everything really come aliveThe Verdict?Once you really get into the game, regardless if your a veteran to the series or just starting out, you can see that despite the long... very long wait, Nintendo really did a good job with the game.On a last note, Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Pikmin) had announced that there is a secret message hidden in the game. I haven't found it yet, but I hope to soon.

Great game - had lots of fun playing it.Major points:Sadly I felt no pressure to "get er done" like the first two put on you.The game also felt a bit easier. The co-op is absolute trash, if you were hoping for this; dont expect it.The world is absolutely gorgeous.Has many extra modes, but none will keep you playing once story is over.Short review:Gameplay was too short - people are going to flame this, and they are welcome too; but 9 hours play timeis just not enough. The additional modes provided took an additional hour. (and i felt like i was forcing myself to play those)The PVP "And yes! its PVP!" is, for the most part, boring. You and a friend ON THE SAME WIIU go head to head racing for resources.you each have an onion, within a short range of each other, and a very small map scattered with food/gold.This got boring fast as you learn each others movements within the first 5mins of play - and then it dries up.And before you say "but kids...." no... i have 3 kids, and each of those have 3 friends that come to play regularly on my systems.age ranges are from 6 to 15, and they too got bored after story mode. Sorry nintendo, u messed this one up!Theres no nintendo network support here either (srsly... wtf), which would have added so many more hours of pvp play time you coulnt count. But this? the fun didnt last on this mode.overall id probably would have waited till the price went down $20 or got it second hand.its NOT worth $70; having said that though, its still a 100% a must own title.
