This game is challenging and fun, with enough moves and attacks to make it feel complex (although it really isn't) with TONS of creative Skylanders and villains. My only negative is how much Skylanders and Crystals cost, I immediately ruled out getting them on Amazon for $10 a pop, so I got them on Ebay, I got 25 figures for $30 but still don't get this game unless you're ready to devote about $50 to it. But other than that it is a great game with fun levels and characters!

GOOD:The storyline is a little better than usual, and the villains have a lot of personality. Kaos is great, but you can have too much of a good thing; variety is important, and characters like Wolfgang and Krankcase are great additions to the universe. While you technically are hunting down villains one by one, it doesn't feel as repetitive as previous games in the series. (Tip for writers: lampshading that the ship gets shot down over and over and over doesn't make it any more creative.)It's cool that you can play as the bad guys, even if it's only relatively briefly. Some of them are a lot of fun and would make great Skylanders (though don't expect it to happen). To do this you need a Trap of the appropriate Element; there are eleven of these, but most of them are pretty cheap used and it's not that onerous. Some of the boss fights -- particularly Chef Pepper Jack and the Golden Queen -- are also good at keeping you on your toes.BAD:Trap Team feels sincerely ... unfinished.Puzzles are gone. Completely. Oh, there are things that the game terms "puzzles," but they come down to "there are three levers, pull all three in any order" or "push the blocks the only ways that it is possible to push them." No thought or intelligence is required; it's just busywork. The "lock" puzzles are still there and occasionally tricky, but they were never terribly interesting to begin with and most can be easily solved by trial and error.A big deal is made of the Academy getting larger after each level, but it only means more rooms with nothing interesting going on -- a bounce pad with money hovering above it is usually it, though if you're lucky you'll get another 2D platforming scene very similar to the previous 2D platforming scenes. The Skaletones minigame is great, but it's also pretty much the last significant thing you'll unlock -- and you unlock it really @#$@ early.Skystones Smash is the new main minigame, and it's a stripped-down version of Magic: the Gathering. The stones are very similar to one another and you get them automatically by collecting villains, so there isn't much strategy, and the AI is horrible and can only win by blatant cheating. You're forced to play a few times to unlock gates and such, but you don't get anything but money for winning so there's no reason to play. The Trap system lets you catch villain characters and then use them in play. Quests for the villains replace the previous games' Heroic Challenges, which are otherwise entirely absent. But ... most Quests just end with a brief cutscene. Even major characters get shafted. When you actually do get a challenge it's usually a super simple one with a ludicrously high amount of time on the clock. The strategy and difficulty of the old challenges is mostly gone; the only one that's even tricky is Brawl and Chain's and that's only because he walks. SO. SLOWLY. through a challenge full of backtracking. The Elemental Gates are back as always, but this time they can only be opened by specific Skylanders called Trap Masters. The areas behind them are much smaller and less elaborate, and often one area will contain half the level's goodies. There are also "traptanium crystals" that can be unlocked by ANY Trap Master. With Giants and the Swap Force it kind of made sense that you had to have a special Skylander to do certain things, since they were so obviously different; Trap Masters are just sculpted with translucent plastic weapons. That's all. That's the only difference. There is no PVP at all. None. Two new Elements are introduced, with four new Skylanders to represent them. The Elemental Gates for these guys are everywhere, way more than there should be. Oh, and two of the new Skylanders of those elements AREN'T TRAP MASTERS and can't open gates, meaning that a *specific Skylander* is required to open these. There are also villains of the new elements that need special traps to capture them and those are NOT cheap ... expect to pay through the nose to get them (I see them going for $50-80 or more). The new Elements are particularly annoying because if there's any difference in feel between Light and Magic, or between Dark and Undead, I can't see it. There was absolutely no need for this, and it's only made worse by the utter lack of choice of characters if you want to unlock everything.OVERALL:If you're just looking for another Skylanders experience, Trap Team does boast the usual gorgeous scenery, button-mashing combat, and appealing cartoon characters. It's just ... stripped down, and considering how content-packed Swap Force was, I have to wonder what the heck happened here. The buy-in to complete the game is also spectacularly high, even for this series, and the requirement to have specific pieces to get into the too-frequent Unknown Gates is obnoxious.

Got this for my 6 year old as a Christmas present. I wasn't too sure about it as he's not a big video game person but he seemed interested in skylanders. Never thought I'd say I wanted my kid to play video games but I was hoping it would help him with hand/eye coordination a bit. I'm so glad I got this! It's not hard and it's fun. I don't generally like or play video games but we've played two player together and have a ton of fun with it. It's been a great activity for rainy days - together time where we talk and laugh and work as a team. It has some weapons and fighting but in a very cartoony way (great cartoon graphics though). I don't consider this violet and I'm a bit of stickler for not letting him watch / play violet things. Note that this is a bit of a money pit as you have to buy different traps so you end up continuously buying characters and traps to get further in the game. If you've never played, the game needs to have the characters (the starter pack comes with a couple but you need more eventually). The characters sit on a round platform that you attach to your wii. When a character "dies" you just switch it with another and go on with the game. You can re-use the characters when you get to a different level but we found out last night that we used all of our characters in a particularly tough battle and had to restart the chapter because we ran out of characters - haha. No biggie and I like that you don't have to restart the whole game - good for a six year old who would get very frustrated with that. In addition to the characters, you need "traps" that sit in a special slot on the platform. These capture the bad guys you defeat. However, some bad guys are "earth" characters, some are "water", etc. (there are a variety of "types". You need different traps for each type. We have "tech trap" and "earth trap" on our wish list right now - LOL.

I haven't played the game much yet - but for now I am giving Amazon two thumbs up on this one - the game was just released today and it was on my doorstep by 9am. No running to the store for me on Sunday morning. As for the game - colors are much improved and game play is a little faster. I will review more after I play more.We have played the game for a little over a week now with a 5 year old. The game is a winner in my house and I would recommend it for entry level gamers. It is a good game to play with the family. At this time there are no magic or earth skylanders and there art ? mark areas that will require additional game pieces. The puzzles are harder then the previous games which is refreshing for this grandparent. I find The game play is still way more interesting then Disney Infinity (I have not played the new platform) and the game pieces are more durable. I have two year old grandson who uses them as action figures and we haven't had one broken yet. If you are on the fence about getting this version I would say go for it - but remember it is a continuing investment. We just spent $140.00 At a Toy's r Us sale.
