If you need a low cost USB to serial converter that JUST converts USB to serial, then this will work fine for you. If you need to use FT-Prog to set up custom VIP or PID, or program any other function, this won't work. This board uses a counterfeit chip that cannot be programmed. The serial number comes up in FT-Prog as A5069RR4 which a quick google search will show is a common serial number used in counterfeit devices. Trying to program in FT-Prog will show "programming successful" then the chip will show default programming again. If you are looking for a real FT232RL chipset for your project, look elsewhere.

I wanted to find a way to program a few micros without over complicating the process. The connection is clean and stable, and the included usb-c was a nice touch (I have zip bag full of them). It worked off the bat without needing any drivers or extra steps, plug-n-play!Voltage selection with the jumper, and the board itself feels well manufactured. Great for flashing firmware and testing. All in all, this is a handy tool to keep on hand if you do any kind of Arduino, ESP32, or work with microcontrollers frequently! Saves a lot of time! Great value and quality!

Works fine with a couple of older devices that I have that don't have native USB support, but have a serial interface. As I learned with another one of these devices, you need only connect the data pins to the serial device. The power pins are only required if the USB port you are using does not provide power to the chip OR if you need to use another voltage level to interface with an older device. Otherwise you may risk damage to the chip. The sellers of these just assume that you know what you're doing with it and don't provide any real documentation for it.

I haven't tried this device with Windows because they only claim support for very old versions of Windows. This makes me nervous that the chip could be harmed by the newer FTDI drivers in Windows 8/10/11. However, it does function exactly as expected in Debian Linux. It can be used for programming microcontrollers like ESP8266 and ESP32 as well as for serial communications in general. It also came with a short USB-C cable and a generous helping of both M-F and F-F DuPont wires.
