Of the many step bits I've used over the past 5 years (drilling 1/4" mild steel), these bits are the best and stay the sharpest. Having said that, I have had one recurrent problem on three or four of these bits right out of the package. The 1/8" bit tip tends to be fragile and frequently break off. Interestingly, if they are going to break, they usually do right away. On several occasions, Amazon has kindly replaced them. In other instances when they've broken after having used them a bit, it requires drilling a larger pilot hold in order to seat the bit at starting.The other learning... definitely use cutting oil. The bits will smoke like crazy, but the cutting oil helps with both cutting speed and retaining sharpness.

Man, this thing eats through aluminum like there's no tomorrow. Used it for mounting relatively thick aluminum solar cross bars to pipe racking Had to drill 64 holes. This thing will literally make a hole in less than 1 second when used on an impact driver. HUGE time saver. So worth the money. I think I dulled it by hitting the galvanized pipe too many times, but even so - the time saved easily makes up for the cost of this little thing.Oh, one thing. If you are drilling overhead make sure to wear safety glasses. Yes, yes - I know. You are always supposed to do that, but in this case you REALLY should. There will be very hot metal shaving flying around and towards your face...

Seems faster than most of the other step drill I have used. So far it is holding up well after drilling about 10 holes through 1/2" steel plate.
