My daughter and I picked this V2 kit to work on together during her fall break. I have built many rockets myself but this was the first one where I let her do most of the work. It came out fantastic! This is a beautiful kit, and with a little patience, you will have a very nice finished rocket. Like most Estes kits, it’s fairly straightforward, but this particular kit has a slight twist to it. The lower section of the rocket is a molded plastic piece. You will need to carefully cut slots in pre-marked locations on the molding so that the fins can be attached through the molding. It’s not hard but the plastic is thick and you’ll need a very sharp knife, so going slowly and carefully is imperative. Most of the slots cut out perfectly, but a couple I had to scrape away some of the plastic to get the fins to fit through. Not a big deal. After cutting the slots we sanded the entire piece with a fine grit sandpaper to remove any remaining burrs or raised pieces of plastic. We also sanded the nose cone, which is also plastic of course, so that the paint would adhere better. Again if this is your first rocket this could be a little challenging, but if you’re a crafty person you’ll get it. Other than that, the kit is very straightforward. The Through the body fin arrangement is really nice, it’s hard to screw up the fin alignment, which is what causes most people issues building these kits in the first place. I recommend this kit to anyone, just take your time, follow directions, and you’ll enjoy assembling this beautiful version of a historic rocket.

This kit is an outstanding value! For a more advanced model the construction is very straight forward and yields a very sturdy rocket. The difficulty in the construction is really the paint job if you choose to go with the scheme suggested on the box. You need to base coat in yellow then mask for the black roll pattern stripes (use frog tape delicate surface tape!). However, due to the large size of the rocket masking is very easy because you have a lot more open surface to work with compared to smaller models. I flew this model with an e engine it was spectacular! I had never flown an engine that size and it immediately had me hooked! This model flew straight and true and makes a great show as it is large and visible through most of its climb. You do have to buy the maxi rod to launch it but the standard launch pad has the larger diameter hole to mount the maxi rod and it’s worth the extra 7 bucks to launch the e engine rockets! This truly is a must have model for your collection and looks great on a shelf for display.

I like building the Estes scale model rockets. This one looks impressive when it launches.

This is a great kit to build, but you will have some challenges along the way as not all is designed to be put together without tolerance issues. With that in mind, you will have to custom rig certain parts and correct slight manufacturing issues. This is what Skill Level 3 is all about. One aspect that I wish were clearer in the instructions is the concept that the fins go through the boat tail section and actually glue to the engine mount tube and to the retention clip retainer tube. If you get some excess glue on the retainer tube, it may cause some grief when trying to fit the fins. Sanding helps, but judging where to sand will be the hard part. These are the challenges that are enjoyable by the experienced builder, but maybe not for the novice. One thing is for sure, it forces you to be creative about resolving building issues and adds a dimension of satisfaction to the project.I also used a hacksaw blade to cut the fin holes in the plastic boat tail section. Lots of sanding, but it is coming together and looking like a great rocket. And, yes, invest in some sort of fin alignment jig for this build.I painted the rocket to be similar to the V-2 Number 3 (May 10, 1946) paint scheme in black and yellow instead of the suggested paint scheme. This was one of various paint schemes used in White Sands, NM after WWII. I couldn't resist but add the skull from a Der Red Max kit. (There is no included pin-up girl decal.) And hence, Der V2 Max is born! Until Estes makes a Der Red Max for 24 mm motors, this Der V2 Max will suffice for me between Der Red Max and Mega Der Red Max. It also kind reminds me of the VF-1S Skull Leader from Robotech with the black and yellow and crossbones: 80's nostalgia.I also modded the rocket to use 200# kevlar like a Quest kit, 9x9 nomex sheet to supplement wadding, and a longer elastic braid for the shock cord. Instructions suggest 10-12 squares of wadding, so a nomex sheet combined with sacrificial wadding keeps the number of wadding sheets down.Next club launch, I am going to fly this on D12-5 and E12-6 power. Der V2 Max!

I used to build a lot of Estes rockets when I was a kid, I grew up and got a bit older and lost interest. My 4 year old twin boys have now developed an obsession with all things rocket. These rockets were a little more complicated than I expected but turned out alright. Launching with the 'E' engines is phenomenal. Because of the curved tail cone aligning the fins was tedious and I broke down and bought a fin alignment jig. Well worth the money. Enjoy.
