My first experience purchasing this light did not go so well. Ulanzi reached out to me and made really things right. I commend them for their professionalism and quality of customer service. Overall, it was exemplary how they sorted out my situation. So I gave this light another shot. And although Ulanzi has been gracious with me, my review is not biased to Ulanzi as my priority is what other people may go through when they purchase a product like the VL-120C. I’m not appeasing a company that has given me service they should anyways. I know that I wish all reviews were written in this fashion as when I do my own research on stuff I want to buy I hope I get the truth. But we know that’s not always the case.I wanted this light due to its size and portability. It provides that in spades. But bear in mind, the light comes with nothing except the light itself. No diffuser or dish, no power plug or battery. No case. You just get a light. At least now, Ulanzi is offering the A/C adapter as a primary accessory on Amazon.ca (separate purchase) with Prime shipping et al. This was one of my original complaints. So even though it’s not included, it’s readily available now. This alone makes purchasing this light more palatable. But I’ve never bought a light so bereft of basic accoutrements.I normally use Amaran and Aputure lights at home, but the portability of the VLC-12c is a signature feature. It’s small enough to fit into a backpack or bag. Easy to pull out, throw a V-mount battery on the back and use. A very lightweight light stand can be used if needed. Another plus to keep weight down if you are mobile. Overall this makes for a good run and gun set up.I use a Core SWX Neo 9 (sub 100 mah) battery and it works fine to power this light on full blast for about an hour. I also tried my Smallrigs (VB 99) v-mount batteries, but neither of the two I have which are new, would be able to power this light on full. After a minute or so, the OP code would flash and everything shut down. But using the VLC-120c at a lower power output such as 50%, allowed the Smallrigs to last much longer. Lights are ampereholics and demand lots of current. Smallrigs claim about 10 amps output on their 99 batteries. The Core Neo 9 claims a 12 amp continuous output. Food for thought on powering this light. The A/C adapter might be the least costly way of supplying full power, albeit at the compromise of mobility.Buying the VLC-120c for home/studio use is not a bad choice. Of course everyone is relative, but for the price you get allot for your money. Portability, 120 watts of bi-coloured light spectrum and RGB, with effects. That’s impressive in this price range. The light quality is good. I found using the Ulanzi light great for fill, a beauty illumination/hair light. I tried some colourful backgrounds and found it was fantastic. On high power, this light is very bright. It has a hotspot in the beam, but I think on higher power, you are best off using a soft box which can easily attach to the built in Bowens mount. The interface is very easy to use. I did not try the app, which if you do place the VLC-120c on a light stand and get it up there out of reach, is likely worth a download to operate the light at distance. The build, well we get into some compromise here. Overall, it’s almost great. The housing feels like plastic and makes up most of the body. The top cover with the ventilation feels like metal to me. If it’s not, that’s a hell of a good plastic compound. The yoke too, feels like metal to me. I had no issue mounting this light on a baby pin on any of my stands. However, the moulded plastic mount on the rear for a v-mount battery (yes, you read it right, it looks and feels like a mould) is the weakest design part of the VLC-120. In almost every case I have to fiddle to get my V-mount battery seated correctly. A trick I learned, depress the release button (the button you would normally use to eject the battery) and ‘open’ the latch, then firmly press the V-mount battery into its mount. If you don’t do this, the battery may not be engaged fully and could fall out or could be blown out of the mechanism with a strong wind. I found, Ulanzi needs to improve this part of the light. More precise engineering and add metal or a really good plastic to the mount.Overall I’m happy with this light. I used it today to send a client a few product photos and though I did it inside my house, the set up was quick and easy. It makes things less stressful, as I didn’t need to unpack one of my large lights, haul out a heavy light stand and set up the A/C extension. Love it.I’ll give this light my solid recommendation. But mind the items you need to already possess, to make it work. Otherwise the overall cost goes up. This is not intended as a key light, in my opinion. But in small situations, it may do. I’m hoping Ulanzi upgrades the V-mount in their next iteration of the VLC-120c which would make this a top-tier choice.

I wouldn't recommend anyone getting this as you can get a much better COB light that actually comes with a power cable unlike this one, prior to editing their ads there was 2 models available and none mentioned it was just the light itself. You basically get the COB light itself, no cables no nothing and you have to buy either a battery, a power cable and a light mount.

This light is smaller than I thought. Its lite and easy to carry. I have bought the ZGCINE v mount battery for this light and its a nice combo for the setup. Make sure buy more batteries for this light as its powerful and consumes alot of power. It has a fan which blow air from front. Phone app is really fast and easy to use. Material is bit cheap on the light but that makes it lite weight.
