I purchased two of these drives to increase storage on two older SATA II capable desktop computers. These drives are high quality and quiet. I've had them for about 8 months now and no problems with either of them. Western Digital has always been my favorite brand of hard drive.

All drives were packaged rather poorly in new static bags. 1 was not even WD, it was a Dell. 1 was labeled "Recertified" and had broken plastic around the connectors, and 1 was a WD but had no regular label, but instead referenced "IBM". I had a few installed and RAID rebuilt before the Dell raised my concern. The 3 installed have not been rechecked but ARE working fine at this time. And the other 4 appeared to be labeled correctly, though packaged poorly. I have a total of 6 installed and those seem to be working fine, no noise... I did note that the packages were not sealed well and ALL were the same type and seal of package regardless of whether possibly "new" or "recertified" or "Dell"... all the same...

I bought 2 of these, and the first thing I did was power each up and check the SMART data. All was clear, in fact the power on cycles showed that I was the first to power them up.They are incredibly quiet, and 2x faster than my old SATA 1 drives they replaced, as expected.I have them in a Linux RAID-0 setup, on an old Asus SATA 2 motherboard, and I can get over 250MB/sec write speed with null data, 190MB/sec read with random data, and 83MB/sec copy with random data.I also got the 2 year warranty for $2.50. These are worth every penny, especially knowing their 1.2 million hour MTBF.

It's a silent Hard Drive with good speed. It's been years I only use Seagate Barracuda for many Computers I bought and upgrade, I think I choose it because its name sounds very strong. First time I bought WD hard drive is for my brother in law. I installed it and runs very good. I recommend this Westerd Digital for everyone.

I used these drives to replace some 500GB drives in an older (4 years approximately) LeftHand SAN. I lifted the serial numbers off of the LeftHand SAN drive and many of them were these Western Digital RE4 serial numbers. They have worked great for a SAN that we just use for basic Research and Development versus Production data. The drives work great and I haven't had a failure yet. I got these because I needed a drive I could get sent overnight with Prime shipping to get a filed RAID rebuilt.
