I like the idea of a “hide-a-key” that adds a layer of protection in case the ‘hidden’ part becomes revealed. I ordered this as a candidate for a hidden key outside my home, with the thought that if it kept the key “secure” while tucked away outside I could use it as a backup if one of the kids forgets their house key, etc. This case ostensibly allows for me to put a layer of protection between my house key and the door (or your car key and the car door), but its failings are evident immediately. The item itself consists of a plastic shell with a hinged plastic door “secured” by a four-digit combination lock. Like the box itself, the locking mechanism is composed chiefly of plastic. The lightweight plastic build makes it seem quite easy to dismantle this thing completely with just a heavy pull on the door, or maybe a hard throw against the pavement. It’s just not very strong so the whole ‘locking’ part seems like a silly joke. Having said that, the included magnets and mounting hardware options are a nice touch. I guess that’s something, but otherwise the bulky size and bold orange coloring make this a less secure option than an old school black magnetic hide-a-key that’s more likely to go unnoticed in the first place.
